Earthquakes and Earth-shaking success
ATLANTA, Georgia, February 12, 2007
Two things rocked my world this morning: The first, an earthquake that hit off the coast of Portugal, in Cabo Sao Vicente, approximately half an hour (to my best estimation) from where I used to live in Lagos (pictured above).
So far, so good, with no damage or injuries reported.
Here’s a rundown:
- On a Richter scale - we got a SIX! [source]
- The quake was felt as far away as Rabat, Morocco, and Sevilla, EspaƱa [source1, source2]
- This was expected - as this 2004 About.com blurb suggests, it was obvious that another quake was acomin. [source]
- Portugal got off lucky - the 1755 quake that nearly wiped out both Lagos and Lisbon killed at least 60,000
Whew! So glad to hear all my peeps are safe … and so pissed that yet again, I miss everything! [The last earthquake I was near was the 2005 LA-area quake. I was in San Diego for the AAN convention, and just heard of it via elevator gossip.] My Lisbon correspondents report that they felt shakes, and joked that it might be a quake.
… and, in Earth-shaking news …
My pal, who runs a secret underground supper club called the Whisk & Ladle in New York City, was overwhelmed with reservations after hot NY website Thrillist.com threw her organization a shout-out.
Over 400 folks responded in 4 hours, begging for a seat at her supper club. There is no way that Whisk & Ladle could ever serve that many clients fantastical meals in a secret loft location … unless the parties that be quit their jobs and made this a full time gig! Which my friend is close to doing! Much congratulations and future successes to the Whisk & Ladle supper club!

Dear Laura:
Will you be coming back to Portugal?

Eileen -
I hope to return to Portugal. I love it; it’s now a permanent member of my list of homes.
