State of the Blog

This thing has been changing as I have changed in recent months, evolving from a commentated series of links into personal reflection on the Poynter experience, and now images of what I am cooking. When I was first given this blog (thank you, Hunter), I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it — what direction it would take, how it would reflect on me both personally and journalistically. I’ve come to realize that it is a combination of all the above things that makes up LauraFries.com — what I am reading, what I am cooking, what I am thinking, and whatever else strikes my fancy in the future. Hopefully the combination is interesting enough to snag me a few readers.

    You are now my #1 source for food porn, LauraFries.com. I can’t believe you take those snaps yourself. They look brilliant. Any food-photography tips?

    Thankee, thankee. I am pleased that you refer to it as ‘food porn’ — for that it truly is. And like all good porno, it gets a little help from Mother Photoshop. I’ve found that white plates are good, above-plate shots turn out better than side angles, and if you hold still, the little flower microfocus setting is pretty badass. I just adjust brightness and contrast a bit, and pop up the saturation a tidge to account for the greyness that web jpegs seem to acquire. And of course, I cook and plate with an eye for presentation. I’m hoping to master Flash enough to a step-by-step of some of my more popular recipes, but that’s going slower than I would have thought. (Props of course going to Team Gulfport designer Adam, who is giving me lessons in the Photoshop.)

    Yes, and if you would spend nearly as much time as I watching the Food TV network, you would see that using ‘plate’ as a verb is very popular– perhaps even a denunciation between the chefs and the pretenderists. (If that too is a word.)
